Revelation by Gary McCarragher follows a Christian family whose patriarch suffers from an existential crisis of faith. Bart Trask was born into an ultra-conservative Evangelical family in the small town of Traskville, Alabama, founded by his great-grandfather. Bart's father, Theodosius Trask, is a Baptist minister, respected and revered by all in Traskville. To his disappointment, Bart is an agnostic New Testament scholar who doesn't share his family's faith. Theo's life turns upside down when Bart delivers a passionate lecture on Jesus and Christianity in a church in Traskville, angering many inhabitants of the town. Meanwhile, Bart helps shelter a young woman hiding from her abusive father. With a buried family secret coming to light, Theo's very foundation of his faith begins to shake as he reevaluates his core beliefs.

How do you change your stance on something you thought was part of your faith and identity? This is the premise of Gary McCarragher's gripping family drama. Revelation follows the story of a young religious scholar whose attempt at conversing with Christian fundamentalists leads to his own father's crisis of faith and reveals an interpretation of the Bible that touches upon a hotly debated topic. McCarragher offers a poignant perspective on a sensitive social issue on both sides of the aisle. Even though Bart and Theo have different beliefs, both are strongly passionate and diligent in their respective fields, creating conflict that is delicious to consume—a thoroughly absorbing book that I highly recommend.
