Author Biography

Susan K. Hamilton is the award-winning author of epic, dark, and urban fantasy books including Shadow King, Darkstar Rising, and the forthcoming The Devil Inside. She’s also dipped her toe in the short story pond and had her work included in the ESCAPE! Anthology and the upcoming DECEPTION! Anthology from Writing Bloc.

Horse-crazy since she was a little girl, she also loves comfy jeans, pizza, great stand-up comedy, and pretty much every furry creature on the planet (except spiders). Susan lives near Boston with her husband and a cat who runs the house like a boss.

Shadow King is an urban fantasy novel written for adults, penned by author Susan K. Hamilton. Combining the modern world with the old legends of the Faerie and Fae people, this exciting and romantic adventure follows our heroine Seireadan Moore. A seer haunted by visions of the figure who destroyed everything in her past, Seireadan’s mission comes to head when she crosses paths with Fae mob boss Aohdan Collins. A playboy and a ruthless Boston gangster, Aohdan’s life is set on a new course when he meets Seireadan, and the pair soon embark on a magical and dark crime adventure that is sure to change them both forever.

Author Susan K. Hamilton has cleverly created a romance novel which ticks all the boxes, packaged beautifully within a lavish urban Fae fantasy setting. The excitement of the dangerous relationship between Seireadan and Aohdan has plenty of punch, with his mafia-style life and the violence and intrigue that go with it. But then, layered on top of the bad boy genre, we find the well described and highly emotive magical story line of Seireadan’s visions. Bringing an epic history of destroyed worlds and displaced people into the mix, the adventures deepens and gains meaning and complexity as the plot continues. Hamilton balances the genres and mixes them well, throwing in cinematic romance and violence with a flair for modern dialogue that keeps the scenes exciting on every page. Overall, Shadow King is a novel overflowing with content, and an exciting and satisfying tale not to be missed.

Shadow King is a romance fantasy and suspense novel written by Susan K Hamilton. Aohdan, a Faery Prince, is the leader of an east coast regime that he tries to lead the right way, hitting a few snags that send him reeling. Between betrayal and love, Aohdan’s life becomes more complicated, making him wonder who did it, and why they did it until at last he finds out. While Aohdan learns the hard way that not everybody is who they say they are, his businesses and his relationships become entwined together, making friends and foes difficult to distinguish. Will Aohdan be able to correctly define between loving friends and hating foes, or will he lose everything to an unforgiving and unexpected weakness?

Shadow King was a very intense and enthralling book. I enjoyed how the author put a red herring into the story to keep the reader on their toes. It was a well-written story, with well-written characters, and a moral to the story, although a tragic one. Starting from the beginning, there are a few clues to as who or what is trying to destroy the hero and the heroine, making the reader wonder if there will be vengeance, or will the villain get away with murder? This book was filled with excitement, romance, sadness, and hope, everything needed to make a great story. Since this book has graphic sex scenes, violence, and strong language, I would suggest a mature reader of eighteen or older.

Shadow King by Susan K. Hamilton opens with a powerful scene, a dream, and even though dreams are my among pet peeves when it comes to a strong opening, this one is so skillfully done that it introduces the reader to the major conflict in the novel and raises questions in the reader’s mind. I was immediately pulled in. A crime committed centuries ago destroyed the Faerie Realm and those that survived hid among humans. Now, the Fae Seer Seireadan begins to have powerful visions about the painful experience of her people. Meeting the playboy Fae Patriarch of Boston, Aohdan Collins, changes everything. She can’t resist his charms and she quickly learns that he is connected to a dangerous and shadowy network. Now she knows that the man she loves passionately can lead her to the arch-enemy of her people. Does she have enough courage to follow the path of revenge?

Susan K. Hamilton has what it takes to keep readers engrossed in a story. I was captivated from the very beginning of the narrative by the strength of the prose and by her ability to weave different elements of style in a single paragraph. The characters are extraordinary, sophisticated, and by their very nature enrich the different aspects of the conflict. Falling in love with someone affiliated to one’s number one enemy is dangerous enough, but the stakes are raised when the desire for revenge grows equally stronger. The plot in Shadow King is masterly and it is strengthened by the suspenseful narrative. I loved the characters, enjoyed the surprises in plot development, but it was the music of the prose that kept me reading from page to page.

Fun of action and intrigue reminiscent of The Sopranos, Hamilton has created a fantastic present-day world ... the main character, Seireadan, is awesome. She is strong, sexy, and capable, and owns it all without hesitation. I highly recommend this book to fans of dark fantasy looking for a new, present day twist.

Ms. Hamilton writes with confidence and authority over the world she builds. This is a very cool story...dark fantasy on a reality-based backdrop with love, revenge, and crime lords! I've never met another book like it, and this story is GREAT. I look forward to more of the author's work!

Susan K. Hamilton's writing has always struck me as swaggering with 'un-earned' confidence - which is to say - she writes with the moxie of an author on their 15th book, not their 2nd. Her debut novel, Darkstar Rising, helped (in my opinion) to confirm what Susan always believed - that she could WRITE. Shadow King fulfills that promise for the rest of us. We're treated to sex, high-stakes and danger in a world that is at once fantastical and rooted in reality. This reader is hopeful that Hamilton will take us on another visit to this world soon!

When you read stories about fairies, you expect good pixies, shimmering castles, and rainbows. Not in this fairy tale. This is a dark story of the Desolation of the Faerie realm and a fragile coexistence between faeries and the human race. The protagonists, Aohdan Collins and his love, Seiraeden are tough Faes. Covered in ink and piercings, they are a formidable part of the underworld.

While the story is dark and full of adult content, it is cinematic in nature, fast-paced, with well-developed characters and excellent world-building. It is apparent that a lot of research was done to create the characters of the faerie world. Recommended for fans of dark fantasy and paranormal romance.
