She Dared to Be: The Legacy of Phillipa Maxine by Karri Theis is an enchanting and empowering tale that takes readers on a captivating journey through the life of a young girl named Phillipa Maxine, affectionately known as "Phil." The story is beautifully woven with rhymes, making it both engaging and accessible to readers of all ages. The narrative introduces us to Phil, a spirited and fearless girl who stands out from her peers. From a young age, she defies societal norms by refusing to conform to traditional gender roles. Instead of tea parties and frilly dresses, she gravitates toward adventurous exploits, climbing trees and wielding swords with unmatched courage. As Phil matures into a young woman, her dreams extend beyond personal achievements. She became a trailblazer for gender equality, forming a women's bowling league and advocating for equal rights and opportunities.

Karri Theis skillfully underscores the power of perseverance in the face of doubt and resistance. Phil and her fellow women face skepticism and misunderstanding, but they remain resolute in their pursuit of change. Their dedication to empowering themselves and others serves as a testament to the strength of the human spirit. The multigenerational aspect of She Dared to Be is heartwarming. Phil's legacy is carried forward by her descendants, instilling in them the values of courage, equality, and empowerment. This beautifully illustrates the idea that positive change is a continuous journey, and one person's actions can have a lasting impact on generations to come. It prompts readers to consider their own aspirations and ambitions, much like Phil did in her lifetime. Through Phil's remarkable journey, readers are reminded of the enduring power of determination, and empowerment, and the importance of passing on these values to future generations.
