Logging camp
Outside of Seattle Washington
Spring 1866
Julianne Maxwell fled  New York  all the way to Seattle to become a mail order bride, only to arrive at the logging camp to find out the man she was to marry is already married.  He wants  her to pay back the money he sent her. Only one problem, she never received any money. Did her uncle intercept the letters and take the money out of them?

He tries to auction her off like cattle at a Saturday farm sale to try and get his money back.. When the boss interrupts what is going on , he  nips it in the bud and says there will be a contest. Winner gets Julianne.

Caleb Hansen has problems of his own. His sister died in childbirth, and he is raising  his nephew. Julianne would fill the need as a mother for the baby.

As they get married, can she trust Caleb?  What about Julianne?  What does Caleb know about her?  Did she  receive the money and  lie about it?  Can she raise enough money doing laundry without Caleb’s  knowledge  to pay back the debt that Caleb paid?   Can this marriage survive?  They may have their plans, but God has better plans.   Will Julianne be honest with Caleb in order to make the marriage work?

This was a marvelous read, and  it just goes to show that  no matter  what we plan , God has something better  for our lives if we would just listen.

Julianne Maxwell flees from her Uncle's home in New York to become a mail order birde in Seattle, Washington. There she discovers the man she was suppose to marry has married another and is wanting the money he gave her for traveling there. Caleb Hansen needs a mother for his infant nephew; so when Julianne gets desparate Caleb offers her his home and name in exchange for the care of his child. Julianne accepts - but only until she can earn enough money washing clothes to repay her debt. But God has other plans for them both. A very good read and a very good lesson on how honesty is not the best policy, its the only policy if a marriage is to work.

I loved this book by Jean Kincaid. It was exciting and moving. I sure hope she writes a sequel. Sue Whitmill

Romantic Reader

Julianne Maxwell has fled her uncles home to become a mail order bride to a logger in Seattle. When she gets there she has no money and the man she was to marry has married another and demands she repay him the money he sent to bring her there.

Caleb Hansen is boss of the logging camp. He needs a good woman to care for his infant nephew but that kind of woman in those parts is hard to find.

Caleb offers Julianne his protection, his home and his name in excange for her care of his nephew. Out of desperation she agrees not really trusting Caleb for what he says. Will they learn to trust each other? Will her uncle find her again?

This is small book but big story. It keep me turn pages and constantly engaged with the characters.

I highly recommend this book.
