Squeeze in Tight. Dragon's on the Right! is Book 2 in the Silly Dragon Series by Margaret M. Curley. The concept of distinguishing right from left is one that children need to learn at an early age and the earlier the better. This book uses a set of ten animal characters alternately squeezed between two stone columns where the reader is given which one is on the right and asked which one is on the left. This process is repeated several times so that the young reader gets the repetitive practice needed to solidify their understanding of the two primary human orientation mechanisms. The characters range in size from a small frog and bird to a large dragon. All are drawn as cute, cuddly creatures that young children will find attractive. Even the dragon is represented as cuddly. The text is repetitive; most text pages contain a version of the following:
“Squeeze in tight.
The cow is on the right.
Now who is on the left?”
This repetition will also help the young reader quickly pick up the cadence and be able to identify the character on the left as they will see the one on the right. The last pages contain an exercise where the reader has to match the word with the character and a list of fourteen of the primary words that appear in the text. Given the images and the repetitive nature of the dialog, this is an excellent book for the child that is being read to before they begin to read on their own. My daughter would have loved it when she was young.
