Sweet Dreams: Where Nightmares Stalk by Jo Ullah is a gut-wrenching thriller set in bustling Bristol. Astrid is a carer, working and studying part-time to build a new life for herself, free from her cheating partner Nick and a heartbreaking loss in her past. As Nick tries to snake his way back into her life, Astrid tries to focus on the mysterious and tormented green-eyed Mark. Will he just be another case study, or can he break through her defensive shell and help Astrid heal as much as she helps others? The timing isn’t great though, as another mysterious man lurks, attacking the women of Bristol. Soon Astrid finds herself in the Beast of Bristol’s path, fighting for the new life she’s worked so hard to build.

I loved Sweet Dreams. Jo Ullah has written an addictive page-turner with a truly unsettling villain. Her exploration of the psychology of the villain is both brilliant and disturbing. Jo has written an all too real book about the dangers women face every day, whether it be partying at night or even going about during the day. Unfortunately, women need to keep their guard up and be alert. This book is unusual, as we see part of the story from the villain’s perspective, which shows us exactly how a predator stalks its prey. Jo balances the story between being a thriller, the psychology of trauma, and healing. That’s what makes this novel so great – it all feels a little bit too real at times.
