The advent of rail transformed mankind's opportunities to explore his world. Yet we are subconsciously aware of a dark side to this innovation that expresses itself in uneasy images, such as the stereotypical damsel tied to the railway lines and whispered tales of trains bound for darker stations than any found on earth. Sometimes, the inside of a passenger coach represents a transitory reality, temporary but terrible. In Terror Train, a selection of authors both new and established explore the train as a setting or catalyst for horror and suspense. They expose various disturbing aspects of rail travel. Trains transcend boundaries, as in 'Customs,' carry unusual cargoes, as a group of kids hitching a ride in a box car discover in 'Summer Train,' and sometimes take you to unexpected destinations, as a young female reporter discovers in 'Shuffling Off to Nowhere.' But not all the action happens inside the train. Some trains are boogie men. Others are killers, or may even keep their hapless passengers in thrall to a fate worse than death.

Terror Train, compiled by James Ward Kirk, is probably not for sensitive readers. It should go down well with fans of horror, though. The stories range from mildly haunting suspense to seriously depraved splatter punk, but it is not all gore and entrails. There are many layers to fear and horror and, depending on your taste for the uncanny, you will probably find at least one story to relish. Pieces vary in length, including traditional short story lengths, flash fiction and poetry. Treat this anthology like a box filled with wickedly taste-twisting candies from the devil's own confectionery.
