The Hedgecock Friasko by Rick Hussey is a mystery novel set in Florida. When a runner is shot in a relatively safe neighborhood, Detectives Lucinda Cruz and Gus Michaelangelo McMurphy are baffled when they show up at the man's hospital room to find it empty. The runner, Stephen Foester, leads the detectives into the middle of a Ponzi scheme investigation that may cost him his life if he can't stay one step ahead of the shooter.

Rick Hussey puts his background as a lawyer and his history of Florida residency to good use in the development of The Hedgecock Friasko. Hussey uses easily identifiable sights to pull the reader into this Florida-based mystery to such a degree that the setting becomes a character as well. While Stephen Foester's story is intriguing, the push and pull relationship between drop-dead gorgeous rookie Detective Lucinda Cruz and hardened Detective Gus Michaelangelo McMurphy offers an interesting subplot and nice relief from the action-packed main plot.

All in all, Hussey's The Hedgecock Friasko is professionally written with a spot-on balance between action to move the plot forward and interesting backstory to develop well rounded characters who lead the reader on a compelling adventure into the world of crime. What starts out as a simple mystery evolves into a complicated web of interrelated events that would challenge even the best detectives to piece together. By far, this novel is one of the best debut mystery novels I've read in a long time. With such great success in his first novel, I can see a bright future for Hussey, filled with many more fascinating stories to keep his readers entertained for years.
