The Heron Chronicles is a beautifully written and illustrated children’s book by Judy Link Cuddehe. It tells the story of heron sisters who couldn’t be more different from each other. Halley longs for adventure and quickly grows bored with life in the nest, but her sister, Ursa, enjoys the quiet moments in life and hopes to never leave their home at Mirror Lake. One day, Halley can no longer ignore her itching wings and flies away, leaving Ursa alone. With encouragement from Squirrel, Ursa finally decides to come down from her nest and soon meets the friendly population of Mirror Lake. Meanwhile, Halley seeks out adventure in far-off lands, making new friends along the way. This wonderful book celebrates differences, promotes the wonders of nature, and reminds readers of the importance of home.

The Heron Chronicles is a simply delightful book. Children and adults will be surprised by the characters that show up along the way. However, while the scope of this tale is quite grand, it is in the illustrations that Cuddehe truly shines. This is not a book to read quickly and then put aside. Instead, readers should immerse themselves in it and study the beautiful artwork, because it truly is stunning. The Heron Chronicles is a children’s book that I would be thrilled to have on my bookshelf and to read to my own children some day. I sincerely hope to read more from this author and highly recommend this book.
