Author Biography

Born: December, 1962. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

As a kid, Jeff suffered from acute asthma attacks, and on a doctor’s advice, his family moved from Pittsburgh to Phoenix for a dryer climate. The asthma persisted for many years, and his early memories were that of his friends playing outside, while he stayed inside, fostering creativity by writing short stories.

The arid climate of Arizona worked to help cure his asthma, and he went on to be a very active young adult, playing varsity baseball in high school. Labeled a jock, little academic expectation was placed on him until his Creative Writing teacher took notice of his assignments.

At 27, he became a runner, with the goal of losing weight. But his self-admitted OCD kicked in. To date, he’s run over thirty marathons, including the Boston Marathon on five occasions, and has competed in eight Ironman Triathlons – the kid with asthma whom the doctor said would never do anything athletic.

Writing continues to be his creative outlet. He’s authored articles for Colorado Runner Magazine, and other publications. The idea of writing The Humiliation Tour came to him after hearing about a very humiliating event that a friend experienced while running in the Las Vegas Marathon. Many years later, when COVID hit and the country shut down, he found himself laid off with a lot of time on his hands, and began that journey.

He lives and plays in Grand Junction, Colorado, with his wife, two children, and three rescue dogs.

Jeffrey Recker's The Humiliation Tour is a riveting, sensational coming-of-age tale that follows the hilarious failures of two talented runners separated by time and connected by blood. Billy Ball, who is a celebrity high school cross-country runner, is a failure magnet. His long list of failures includes being dropped on his head by his father after his birth in a recliner, being stuck in the friend zone, leaving a school pep rally in handcuffs, and losing his pants in a public event. Jimmy Flynn, another gifted runner, is no stranger to failure himself. Running away from a fight, botching a robbery, and becoming a subject of ridicule in Wilmerding are only a few of his many misfortunes. Fortunately for the humiliated runners, one of them will get a final chance to redeem their family glory on the grand terrains of Boston. Does another failure lie in the paths of our fast, unrelenting protagonists?

The Humiliation Tour takes off on the right track and maintains an engaging pace and string of incidents that alternates between two main perspectives. I seriously enjoyed Jeffrey's brilliant use of similes and his poetic description of events. The sheer absurdity of some incidents and characters is sure to get you laughing out loud—such as a runner who starts reading books on how to run faster but ends up not running and reading for nine months. Despite its humorous nature, the book includes a thought-provoking portrayal of various themes: bureaucracy, court cases, substance abuse, gambling, dating, policing, pornography, growing up, and more. Running enthusiasts, athletes, and fans of funny coming-of-age stories will love The Humiliation Tour. Just when you think it can't get more hilarious, it does.

I'm truly honored to receive a 5 star review and a silver medal in the genre of Fiction Sports by Readers' Favorite. This novel was my COVID baby, keeping me engaged and positive during the lockdowns. I felt that I got to know the characters so well that eventually they took over, telling me what to write, where to take it, while I simply struck the keyboard for them. It was also an exploration of my youth, my roots, and my imagination. Parts of this novel is laced with factual tidbits on the early years of the Boston Marathon, Prohibition, and The Great Depression. I particularly enjoyed writing those scenes, as there was a great deal of research that went into them. I learned a lot. Although, the main story line takes place in the 90s, an era that I remember all too well. While this novel is pure fiction, going back to that era was a kindling of nostalgic memories, and had me laughing and crying at the same time, while I struck the keyboard. This novel was had to categorize. While running is at its core, it could very much fit into the genre of Coming-of-Age, or Comedy. While hilarious at times, it is also quite poignant. It's a soul searching novel, complete with the angst of growing up, finding one's path in life, and of course, a love story to boot.

This book really caught my attention while traveling this summer. I'm also an old-time runner, current triathlete, and have met "Boston Billy" Rodgers, so could relate to many situations and stories along this journey! Mr. Recker gives the reader a fresh look at life, running, and how family histories all play a part in Billy's life. Such a fun read, thanks for the memories!

This book is amazing. I’m not a regular reader, but this story and its characters drew me in. The parallel stories of Jimmy and Billy kept me engaged in what happens next? And it’s a timeless tale of “real-life” troubles that we all face as young people trying to find our way. A truly great book.

Rarely do I come across a book that pulls me in and hangs on to me. Loved the story the humor the relatability to the characters. Growing up in Arizona and running Boston in the 70’s and 80 Jeff is spot on in his story telling. A must read for runners and non runners. It’s now on my short list of most enjoyable reads.

From the very first chapter, Jeffrey Recker has a way of engaging you, entertaining you, and putting you right alongside the characters (particularly Billy) in his book. The Humiliation Tour is relatable whether you’re male or female, runner or couch potato, young or seasoned in life. Thoroughly good read! And funny as can be. I ran track and field in HS, but never cross country or marathons. Yet, I found myself identifying with Billy’s experiences and was so happy to see that this book is about so much more than just running. Highly recommend!

This is the most enjoyable novel I've read in a long time. In addition to the protagonist, Billy Ball, there's a bevy of entertaining characters, so well depicted that I feel like I've met them. And there are many amusing events and happenings in this story. Plus the historical references to the Boston Marathon and prohibition and the great depression are fascinating. I was thoroughly captivated by "The Humiliation Tour". It was a pleasure to read!

A great read, real page turner. Having run the 100th Boston back in 96 in brought back great memories. A must read for all runners.

I devoured “The Humiliation Tour” on my most recent redeye from DC to London. A welcome departure from my usual, heavy non-fiction reads, “The Humiliation Tour” is a delightful, heart-warming story. I highly recommend this book – the author's COVID lockdown labor of love – to both running and non-running friends alike, as there is truly something relatable in it for everyone. The book is a well-balanced mix of sweet, poignant moments and crass, laugh-out-loud scenes that had at least two flight attendants approach me as I read through the overnight, 7-hour flight: “That must be a great book! You haven’t slept at all!” Indeed, It IS a great book! Get yourself a copy and enjoy!

This is such a wonderful book - best of any I've read in the last year!! It's a book for runners, but don't be fooled! Recker tells a story nearly all of us can easily relate to - coming of age with all the mishaps, mistakes, awkwardness, sex and relationships, and simultaneously fighting and embracing one's family, heritage and history. All of this is told with humor that will have you on your ass laughing! If you are a runner, you'll find renewed purpose and motivation and revisit the runner's ultimate question, "why do I do this?" And EVERYONE will enjoy a beautifully written tale that warms the heart - it did for me.

As a former high school cross country coach, I laughed, cringed and cheered my way through Billy’s (mis)adventures. It was easy to see so many of the runners I have known in these pages. This funny yet moving story not only includes the modern day coming of age, but also has a fascinating historical connection. I loved it, and highly recommend it, even if you aren’t a runner or a high school-aged boy-everyone will find connections to Billy’s story.

Woody Woodburn

One need not be a runner to enjoy Jeffrey Recker’s storytelling in his debut novel “The Humiliation Tour.” With a mix of heart and history, love and mystery, humor and humiliation—and perhaps triumph?—it is a page-turning coming-of-age story.

Actually, it is two parallel coming-of-age stories separated by time: narrator and star distance runner Billy Ball in the present and his great-grandfather, Jimmy Flynn, who not only ran from a bootlegger named Paddy O’Donnell but ran in an early Boston Marathon.

And, like an elite marathoner, “The Humiliation Tour” picks up its pace as the race/pages add up and finishes with a furious kick.

Toby Moran

I loved how relatable this story was, for anyone who's ever felt like they may have more failures than successes. It's also definitely a book for runners of all ages and abilities.
The story is paced like a long run. It starts out easy, finding its rhythm, settles into a comfortable pace, then speeds breathlessly towards the end.
Coming of age is not only for the young. Read this book. Tell your friends.
