Using the rule of nines, she estimated his burns at 80 percent. Not much could be done for him apart from a generous dose of morphine. When Cathy held his hand, the skin on his palm sloughed off. Earlier during orientation, she had done an impromptu amputation on another patient. Even though she knew joining the military would break her parents’ hearts, she went ahead. Was it because Ryan had joined, or was it out of determination to do her duty as her dad had done many years ago? Could she brave the horrors of Vietnam, or would she give up after the numerous challenges and head back home? The Jackson MacKenzie Chronicles: Oath of Destiny by Angel Giacomo is wonderfully written. It offers a unique perspective on the Vietnam War from a medic's point of view. Another theme in the book that will surely capture the reader's attention is the concerns, fears, and worries of women serving in the army. I loved how Angel detailed what was happening and how vividly she described the events and the characters' emotions; it was an adventure without leaving my couch. The plotline flowed seamlessly, leaving no room for confusion. I found this book entertaining and thought-provoking; it got me thinking about the effects and costs of war. I can't wait to read something else from this talented author.

The realism in this novel is something to behold. The writer put a lot of effort into getting things correct. The book is hard to put down. Some of the situations give me the shivers wondering how Cathy will survive the assault on her heart and soul. The foreword given by Patti Hendrix, who actually worked and survived her service as a nurse at an Evac hospital told of how much of the contents of this novel are based in reality. Hats off to the author for writing such a wonderful book. A tribute to those that served.
