“The Light: A Novel” by Robert Hammond is a novel with metaphysical undertones. It depicts the wild ride of the heroin-addicted life of Abel Adams, the son of an affluent black family that struggled with his identity in a predominantly white community in the 60s. But his journey was different; he was aware of his birth trauma and the calming effects of Demerol. Later his street-smart friends, Yogi and Jay, introduced him to weed, etc. In his teens, he got busted, entered Juvenile Hall and came out a career criminal. His aunt prophesied that Adams would become a preacher. But he would have to survive decades of substance abuse, near fatal accidents, burglary and drug possession charges, jail time and rehab. Readers will love this story of redemption.

I finished reading this fast-paced, page turner in one afternoon. The dialogue and the cast of characters are drawn realistially. Abel’s life might have been extreme but his emotional issues were common. His poetry was insightful and the quotations and scriptures were uplifting. Robert Hammond has won several prestigious awards for his film projects, screenwriting and producing. Hammond has written more than a dozen bestselling books including “Ready When You Are: Cecil B. DeMille’s Ten Commandments for Success.” “The Light” is highly recommended.
