The Lost Tooth by A.M. Vela was a very educational book that I and my daughter both enjoyed. The story is about a baby hippo who has lost his tooth. He goes all over and asks his animal friends if they have his tooth. Each animal he asks tells him no, but describes how many teeth they have. At the end, the baby hippo finally finds out what happened to his tooth.

I chose to read The Lost Tooth with my 5-year-old daughter because she will be losing her teeth soon. She is a little nervous about it so reading stories about losing teeth is very helpful to her. When I started reading this book, I did not know how educational it would turn out to be. Vela educated me on how many teeth certain animals have. The one that surprised me the most was the snake with least 100 tiny teeth. My daughter enjoyed seeing all the different animals throughout the story.

My daughter and I both loved the colorful illustrations. Each one shows the different animals in their natural habitats. One other thing that my daughter loved was the picture of the baby hippo at the end of the book. We never knew they would be so cute as babies! The wording in the story is not too difficult. My daughter was able to read most of it by herself.

Overall, I liked this book. If your children are about to lose a tooth or like animals, then this is a good book for them. This is the type of book I would like to see in a dentist’s office. I hope to read more of Vela’s work in the future.
