The New Dog In The House by Rita Mendoza tells the tale of Brownie, a cute little dog who refuses to let his owner give him a bath because he is too busy playing with his friends. When he keeps fighting against her, despite being bought all new kinds of shampoo to try, he is left to get very dirty. His fur changes color and grows out so that he looks like a completely different dog and he begins to smell. One day, while he is playing, he spots another dog in the house, a very dirty one. Is it a different dog or is Brownie in for a surprise? His owner has the answers as she explains the confusing new house guest and the consequences he is facing.

Rita Mendoza has created a cute and engaging tale of a naughty pup that soon learns his lesson the hard way about what happens when you don't take a shower. The images are fun and colorful and I think that children will love them. It will make a great bedtime read. Brownie's dilemma is relatable, especially to younger children who don't like baths, usually because that leads to bedtime. It works on two levels, telling an entertaining story through the eyes of a puppy and showing children the importance of getting washed. I think that children would enjoy The New Dog In The House and that they would be attracted to the pictures. I would recommend this book for young children around the ages of three to five years old.
