The Opener by John Triptych is an exciting novel dealing with the kind of white collar crime depicted in the movie The Wolf of Wall Street, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The Opener is about crime and greed, and how far people will go to win. Don Rouse is an easy-going young man raised in Kansas, Detroit, and finally Hollywood, California. Don is raised by a somewhat indifferent single mom, but he is a likable kid and for me a very sympathetic character. He tries hard and even manages to finish college, but the economy hits rock bottom and finally, with some help from a friend, he lands up teaching English in China. The setting changes often in The Opener because it’s a very fast paced read and the characters run from everything - the law, each other, love, even success.

The Opener is a very good fast read. I found that I couldn't put it down for long because I wanted to know what would happen to Don next. Would he get the girl? Would he get the money? Or is he forever doomed to get the shaft? John Triptych has written a novel that is fun to read and meant to be read fast. The locales where most of the crime and action take place are familiar to me. John Triptych describes life in China, Thailand, and the Philippines with the voice of someone who has been there. If you are even slightly interested in the life of ex-pats in Asia, read The Opener.
