Can you imagine any other Cinderella than the one who really did clean the cinders from her step-family’s hearth? But, what if the tale went awry and the fairy godmother, Amelia, who was supposed to help the real Cinderella meet her prince charming, decided to take Cinderella’s place and marry the prince herself? What if this fairy godmother decided to give up her fairy wings, to take her one promised wish and grant herself what she desired most? The man, the prince of her dreams? When greed and evil overcome the goodness and kindness even of fairies, anything is possible – and not always to a good end, a happily-ever-after end.

Beka Gremikova’s short story, The Other Cinderella, is a clever retelling of the classic fairytale. The plot now follows Amelia, the fairy godmother, on her quest to secure her dream of marrying the love of her life, Prince Charming himself. The interaction with the real Cinderella is sad but telling as evil intentions erupt from both the dejected cinder-girl and the once magical, caring fairy godmother. The characters are well developed and the reader will instantly develop a dislike of both Cinderellas, even the tragic one, the real Cinderella, who is jilted in her true role in the fairytale legend. The author expertly incorporates backstory to allow the fairy community to plead their case to Amelia, to try to talk her out of her desire to become human, to leave behind her fairy magic, and wed the man of her dreams. It’s a clever plot, one that will haunt those who love the original classic.
