The Pen Thief and The Chamber of Power is the second book in the series and continues the story of Arnie, Kayley, and Erik. After Arnie Schmidt is given the three pens of power by Kayley’s grandfather, he makes some bad decisions and draws the attention of two criminals. Their lives are in danger, and this becomes even more serious when an international organization, The Imperium, led by the enigmatic Donovan becomes aware that they possess the pens. The three teenagers have to avoid the crooks, further investigate the powers of the pens, and solve clues and hints left by Kayley’s grandfather. The Guardians are a secret group tasked with protecting the pens and the pens’ bearers. Author Tasha Madison creates a world of mystery, adventure, and magic.

The Pen Thief and The Chamber of Power is an excellent follow-up to The Pen Thief and the Orbit of Uncertainty, and Tasha Madison writes in an engaging style. Her storytelling is visual, her villains both frightening and likable, and her heroes flawed, but fun. This is pure adventure from start to finish, and the pace never slows. The three protagonists have enough self-doubts and weaknesses to make them authentic, and I have a soft spot for Erik. There are echoes of famous magical teens and even elements of famous spies, but Tasha Madison’s world is compelling. Although it is set in the modern world, I feel an undercurrent of Victorian cyberpunk, and this gives it a magical, dreamlike quality. There is nothing offensive or explicit in this book, and it is a rip-roaring tale well-suited for the young adult audience.
