Petal is a pink grasshopper – yes, they do exist. They’re a unique rarity. Noah Binder’s The Pink Grasshopper’s Search for the Unique is Petal’s journey to learn more about the world around her and all the other unique creatures that she hopes to meet. It’s her quest, her need to fulfill her curiosity. It’s a journey that introduces her to many creatures of all sizes, sometimes frighteningly large and at other times somewhat small and fragile. While Petal travels across the distant meadows, not only does she learn about other living, and often unique, creatures, but she learns more about herself and how she fits into this marvelous world. Her story is one of courage, friendship, and discovery.

Noah Binder’s early chapter book, The Pink Grasshopper’s Search for the Unique: Petal’s Trail of Wonder, is a clever mix of reality and fantasy, weaving the real, natural world into a fable of epic proportions. The language is simple so young readers can easily follow along and read by themselves. The plot evolves as Petal embarks on her journey and learns about the world around her. At the end of the story, there’s a fascinating and informative section that teaches young readers about the many creatures Petal meets, complete with a question-and-answer section and color photographs of the creatures. This is a great way to learn about the natural world and how important it is to care for our world. It might take courage, as Petal demonstrates on several occasions, but we must recognize and protect the wonders that surround us because they’re unique, as we are all unique and different in our own ways.
