In The Procedure by Elea Plotkin, protagonist Whitney Olson, a Crested Butte local and devoted mother of a child with a disability, is on the cusp of achieving significant triumphs in her professional skiing career. Endorsed by an influential corporation, she embarks on a global journey alongside a group of fierce competitors, honing her skills in some of the world's most perilous terrains while preparing for the World Extreme Ski Championship in France. However, the team's journey takes a dark turn when Whitney is threatened by a teammate and the corporate sponsors force her and others to participate in a secretive neuro-surgical procedure in Belgrade, meant to eradicate fear but instead leading to unsettling behavioral transformations, endangering the team's unity and their lives.

High-stakes suspense, science-fiction-style medical thrills, and elite-level extreme sports? Yes, please! The Procedure by Elea Plotkin operates on a unique premise that twists the traditional methods of performance enhancement and does so in a niche sector of sporting that many of us may have heard of but few really know much about. Plotkin's greatest skill as a writer is their ability to show us absolutely breathtaking scenery and weave it into neck-bracing tension. At one of the locales, readers are treated to a window view described as an "awe-inspiring amphitheater of frozen glaciers, snow-covered peaks, and waterfalls." In this same chapter, Whitney gets into a physical altercation at a bar to protect Shenti. I loved Whitney's intense desire to remain her authentic self and to keep priority number one at the forefront: she is a mother, and she is desperately needed to be 100% Whitney. The dichotomy of a child's declining health while their mother sees hers soar—quite literally—is such a strong and pervasive angle and one of many in Plotkin's novel. Very highly recommended.
