The Reluctant Bridegroom by Arabella Sheraton is an excellent addition to the historical romance genre. Lord Hugo Wendover, the titular reluctant bridegroom, has been coerced by his sister's machinations and a promise made by his father into meeting with one Miranda Lavenham...little more than a dairy maid in Hugo's thinking. The fact that this trip may be just the thing to get Lord Hugo out of the pressures of a dancer with aims of rising in the world is no small encouragement to his leaving the city either. Yet when he comes upon Miranda, he finds that he is quite taken with her, despite his misgivings and her desire not to be married to a gouty old nincompoop (though Lord Hugo is only just rounding thirty!).

The story is a cute play on an old classic. Forced to be suitors, Miranda and Hugo both have some preconceived notions about one another. Through some delicately impolite situations and some delightfully humorous ones, their romance takes off and is a joy to behold. Let me just pause for a minute and take note of this book's quality appearance. From the cover to the font to the way that the book was structured, someone took time and care to ensure that everything was beautifully layered and lush in color. The cover and content do give off first impressions, and The Reluctant Bridegroom starts us off on the right foot as soon as you pick the book up!

I absolutely adored this story. It was a quick read, but fun and containing both witty and situational comedy that had me grinning like an idiot on my train. Arabella Sheraton gets full marks from me for her Reluctant Bridegroom!
