Neal Havers receives a mysterious phone message from his brother, Steven, and is thrust into a mystery that he would prefer to avoid. The Secret Letterbox by John Kemp details Neal’s trip from his home in Florida to his native England to search for his missing brother and a professor with secrets important to national security. With unexpected aid from his dead triplet, Alan, Neal is led across the moors, in danger from secret agents who are also looking for the professor’s papers. Depending on memories of their childhood pastime of letterboxing, Neal uncovers secrets, not only relating to the mystery at hand, but also to the nature of the bond between siblings, especially triplets tragically separated at a young age by an unexpected death. Unsure of his mental stability after receiving a concussion, Neal trusts his instincts and follows his young brother. Will he be in time to save his remaining brother or will the agents beat him in the end?

Well written and smooth-flowing, The Secret Letterbox by John Kemp is a delightful read with just enough mystery and intrigue to be exciting. Neal is an unlikely hero – somewhat of a hypochondriac – but he does what he must to help his brother. While this is an adventure story, the real emphasis is on fraternal dedication and the link to a sibling lost to the grave many years before. The supernatural elements are brief and gentle without any heavy sense of hocus-pocus and represent the child-like innocence of the last time all three boys were together. The Secret Letterbox is a delightful read with a very down-to-earth main character who represents the average guy doing the best he can in unusual circumstances.
