The Son of Shin'ar is a work of fiction in the fantasy, action, and adventure subgenres, and forms the first novel of The Fallen Anzumaru epic book series. Penned by author Leon Draceon, it is best suited to the general adult reading audience. Naholis belongs to a tribe of people who hold extraordinary power over the control of reality, and she soon becomes plagued by dreams of a malevolent force trying to take control of those powers for itself. The celestial Anzumaru, known as Belnuru, begins the hunt for power with Naholis in his sights, whilst a rookie solider, Axiroas, faces up to his worst fears when he’s pulled closer to the conflict than he could ever have imagined.

Author Leon Draceon has crafted a powerful opening to an epic fantasy series that keeps its high-stakes tension and action rolling from the opening cover to the very last moments of its deeply satisfying plot line. I was absolutely thrilled to enter the tribal world that Draceon has crafted, with such intense worldbuilding in the description and atmosphere of places and magical powers, but also in the culture, belief systems, and intricate interactions of the different characters. Stories of tension, cat and mouse chases, and high-stakes dangers are driven by their villain, and I found Belnuru to be fully three-dimensional and suitably wicked without ever being cliched. As his quest intensifies, you really feel for our terrified young heroes and root for them to find the strength they need. Overall, I would certainly recommend The Son of Shin'ar as a superb epic fantasy novel, and I can’t wait to see where the series takes us in the future.
