The Spymaster's Mistress by Pamela R. Winnick is a fantastic example of historical fiction at its finest. It is a sweeping and emotional tale of romance and espionage, faith and heartache, hope and bitter betrayal. The story introduces us to distant cousins Rachel and David, who find themselves entangled in the messy business of war. Rachel Gomez, a young Jewess, knows in her heart that women are not above serving their country. Remembering her late mother's words, she sets out to assist her country, no matter the cost. David Salisbury Franks, also a Jew, is an American soldier and is proud to serve under a great American hero. When things begin to shift in the war, and once-clear lines suddenly turn murky, will either of these Jewish American patriots find themselves on the right side of history?

When I first picked up this novel, I wasn't sure what to expect, but this magnificent tale drew me in. The Spymaster's Mistress by Pamela R. Winnick is one of the best stories I've ever read. I adored the mysterious and almost haunting tone and I was captivated by the ever-deepening plot. Rachel is a young and relatable heroine. Her intelligence and passion make her the perfect lead for this story. Paired with David in his more secondary role, the two work brilliantly together to give readers a good understanding of the events without giving too much away. Winnick tells this historic tale beautifully, captivating the hearts and minds of readers while also including interesting and lesser-known facts about the events of the time in the process. Her research and passion for the subject are evidenced by the attention to detail that went into this incredible story and is sure to entice fans of historical fiction and those of the American Revolution.
