Addison, a retired US embassy official in Zimbabwe, disappears while participating in a Yoruba Juju cult ceremony; and a Diplomatic Security agent, Dominc Grey, is tasked to find him, assisted by Nya Mashumba from the Zimbabwe Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A product of a vicious father and a mother who died of cancer while he was young, Grey bummed across Asia, ending up in the Marines. Avoiding a court-martial for striking a superior, he joined the Diplomatic Security service.

Nya is a disillusioned young woman, seeing her beloved country slide from prosperity to abject ruin at the hands of the new regime. As a government employee, she enjoyed freedom and privileges, but that did not mean she had sold her soul to them. She is happy to use her position while trying to find her father’s killer.

N’Anga, a powerful Juju priest from Nigeria, comes to Zimbabe seeking something Nya’s father had and killed him because of it. Dr. Olatunji Fangwa, the Nigerian Cultural Attaché, is a babalawo, a black Juju priest, and knows more about Addison’s disappearance than he is telling. With Nya taken by the cult and Dominic fired from his position, he now must find her and Addison...before the N’Anga kills her.

The Summoner is a powerful descent into African mysticism and the occult - perhaps more powerful than Western belief systems. Layton Green draws the reader inexorably into his world and demonstrates vividly that dark Africa can be much darker than most people believe. The book subtly weaves together a seemingly simple investigation into a disappearance, incorporating real emotion and intense imagery of the power of the occult to control the mind. Layton Green is a gifted writer with a dry wit, thought provoking, and someone to be taken seriously.

This book really is incredible. It has just the right mixture of suspense, mystery, and intellectualism. A truly fun, informative, and just plain great read.
