Written in a satirical style similar to The Screwtape Letters by C. S. Lewis, The Surelock Commentary on the Book of James: A Bible Study from a Different Perspective by Roger Riccard is an eye-opening examination of the teachings found in James. It takes an epistolary format in which a senior demon, Surelock, guides his subordinate, Wantsome, on how to subvert the instructions provided in the Book of James and keep believers from reading the Book. Surelock suggests techniques that Wantsome can use to discourage and deceive his charges while manipulating them. The work examines each chapter, addressing commonly held misconceptions about specific passages. It shows how the teachings provided are especially relevant in today’s world and encourages Christians to remain vigilant and aware of demonic strategies.

The work is a critical reminder to believers of the enemy we face and the tactics the devil uses to tempt Christians and undervalue biblical teachings. I appreciated how the book shows the relevance and importance of the Book of James in combatting current issues faced by churches and Christian communities. Its discussions about the misinterpretations of certain verses are thought-provoking and it aptly tackles the theological topics shared in James. While entertaining, The Surelock Commentary on the Book of James by Roger Riccard is a timely, compelling work that is bound to stir readers into action and encourage them to avoid complacency. Readers will love the work’s style and will find its observations enlightening. Highly recommended.
