“Doing new things is how we learn.” Yes, doing things is one way to learn, but for young April Smart, the protagonist of The Toffee Man And The Kingdom of Ends by LK Quinn, some lessons are learned when others do things, and they are lessons better left unknown. The story unfolds during the late 60s as man prepares to land on the moon. For ten-year-old April, this is a time of discovery, fascination, and growth where dreams can make anything possible. Her voyage, though, is not easy; she comes from a poor family living in England, who are struggling to get by. As she explores her surroundings and discovers the world, April meets two wonderful people and many individuals with narrow-minded views, hiding behind a façade of righteousness, which ultimately leads to betrayal from those closest to her.
Uncomfortable yet poignant, The Toffee Man and the Kingdom of Ends by LK Quinn is an emotionally gut-wrenching story about abuse. The plot follows a gifted young girl who, despite her challenging circumstances, strives to be a good person while facing a life of maltreatment from her family and society. Throughout the narrative, themes of friendship, growth, and betrayal create an atmosphere that oscillates between boundless hope and utter despair. The character development is exceptional, featuring a cast of unique individuals who evoke both delight and discomfort. While the pacing is on the slower side — as is fitting for a novel of this nature — the author's flexible writing style is outstanding, shifting from the restless prose of a child to the darkest thoughts of anguish. Overall, it is a difficult read due to the subject matter, but I highly recommend it regardless.
