Author Biography

Carlos Lupton has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics and Education. Lupton's main concern is that mathematical jargon should be introduced to kids at an early age. This would, in Lupton's mind, help eliminate the math anxiety so prevalent in today's American youth.

Carlos Lupton has created this fairy-tale to present the jargon of Geometry to young learners in a fun, fairy-tale/coloring book format.

Math can be made fun to learn, says Lupton!

The Wonderful World of Genie Geometry is a children's educational book written by Carl (Carlos) Holdren Lupton and illustrated by Phillip Godenschwager. The author holds academic degrees in mathematics and education and used this background to prepare his introduction to geometry. The book has three parts: there's a story that's suitable for a teacher or other adult to share with a student or class; an interactive picture book that has pictures and drawing assignments for kids; and a glossary of mathematical terms and concepts. After each chapter is read, the students are prompted to go to the picture book and begin their assignment. The story is presented by Genie Geometry who was told the tale by her grandfather, Grandpa Pythagoras Geometry, and grandmother, Trulia Right Angle-Geometry. The story goes back to Great-Grandpa Segy and his bride, Great-Grandma 2Sides-Geometry.

Carl (Carlos) Holdren Lupton's children's educational book, The Wonderful World of Genie Geometry, demystifies the foundations and concepts of geometry in an entertaining and interactive format. Phillip Godenschwager's illustrations are funny and are easy to draw models to help children complete their assignments. I love mathematics, but, as a math tutor, found geometry to be a subject that can intimidate or scare both kids and adults. Lupton's approach makes geometry easily accessible by making the learning experience a hands-on process. He also breaks down the relationships between lines and angles in a literary format that also works as a fairy tale or fantasy story. I won't be forgetting Grandpa Pythagoras Geometry any time soon, and I don't think kids who work through this clever and original book will either. The Wonderful World of Genie Geometry is highly recommended.

The Wonderful World of Genie Geometry is a delightful story showcasing various triangles in geometry. The presenter is Genie Geometry, who avidly outlines her genealogy to a class of children. She traces her parents' courtship as well as that of her grandparents. For example, she reveals that her grandfather, Pythagoras Geometry, was eager to share what attracted him to his wife, Trulia Right Angle. They both had a similar shape and fitted together perfectly. Each of them also had a square in one corner. Pythagoras made a vow to his wife that he would wear the same red and white colors in his square that Trulia wore. Genie Geometry also explains to the kids that her dad, Con-Groovy Geometry, had also made a similar vow to his wife on their wedding day. He proposed that he would make a coat for his wife to wear. Some of the other members of Genie’s family are also present to share their special life stories with the class. It is quite obvious that Genie and her family are very close knit and are confident, happy individuals.

The Wonderful World of Genie Geometry is an excellent way of promoting an interest in mathematics to young students. Author Carlos Lupton chose to personalize these geometric shapes and literally infused them with lots of spunk and personality. I read the story and almost forgot that the author was writing about triangles. I hated mathematics at school. I found it utterly boring. If I'd had this book when I was a young student, I might have performed better in my tests. I love the colourful illustrations interspersed throughout the text. They really add some zest to the overall appeal of the book. Using bold headlines in each chapter galvanizes the reader’s attention. He/she definitely knows the exact content of each chapter. I like the fact that the author included a section for readers to practice drawing their triangles. This encourages interaction and could lead to further positive group sessions in classes. The glossary is also self-explanatory, giving the appropriate details to the story. This is an ingenious way of teaching both English and Mathematics to young readers. I applaud the author for his work and look forward to more books simplifying Mathematics.

The Wonderful World of Genie Geometry Story Book by Carl Holdren Lupton is an innovative way to introduce children to geometry at an early age. The book deals with the aspects of geometry as a family, with various members representing geometry terms. For example, there is Grandpa Pythagoras and Grandma Trulia Right Angle. The storyline is that Genie Geometry explains to her peers the various members of her family and their relation to geometry. There is then an interactive aspect where the readers are encouraged to draw their versions of the geometry family. There are also other interactive aspects such as working out Grandpa Pythagoras’ age. The book is ideally aimed at classes so that children can be encouraged to participate in the story.

The author, Carl Holdren Lupton, has clearly looked at a new way to encourage young children to understand that maths can be fun and to dispel anxiety about the subject. The illustrations certainly enhance the idea. Whilst the idea is new and refreshing, it might be a little daunting with all the phraseology associated with geometry, but it goes a long way to make the subject fun and shown in an unusual format. The family idea itself works well, although it may be better to simplify the names even more if aimed at First Graders. The object of introducing geometry to children at a young age is to be applauded, although this particular book would perhaps be better suited to an older child. The illustrations are bright and colourful and it is a clever idea to adapt them to the shape of the family member. This would be an interesting and stimulating addition to a classroom.
