This Can’t Be The Last Time by Leslie M. Durr is the story of a young woman, Norah, who travels with her friend Nancy through Europe for three months. The women had quit their nursing jobs in New York City after saving up enough money for their trip. Their trip is a great adventure where they meet two Dutch friends, Maarten and Arie. Norah develops a strong connection to Maarten, but even though they fall in love, they never seem to cement plans to connect their lives permanently. They both start living their own lives but stay in touch and meet each other again through a few visits over their 50-year friendship. The story is told from Norah’s perspective, now in her seventies, as she remembers their romantic encounters.

This Can’t Be The Last Time by Leslie M. Durr is a beautifully written love affair that inspires and delights. The story is lighthearted and memorable. To me, it appeared like a coming-of-age story. Two young people, Norah and Maarten, are in their early twenties when they meet, and for some reason, they don’t communicate clearly and directly, so their lives never merge. Only in their 70s do they become honest and straightforward. They share unashamedly and unreservedly their feelings for each other. Now matured, they do not wallow in their past mistakes and regrets but ensure they spend their last moments in each other’s lives. Although death is constantly lurking in this story, given the age of Maarten and Norah, Durr managed to keep this story blissful and inspiring. I enjoyed reading this book.
