A picture is worth a thousand words – how many times have we heard that oft-repeated phrase? Photo artist Tarra Light’s Timeless Images is what she describes as “telling stories with pictures.” Her images of ordinary, hard-working people taught her “that poverty is not a barrier to happiness. Here life was more simple and seemingly sweeter.” The impact of this photographic collection is subtle but clear. There are beautiful faces, happy faces, serious and studious faces, curious faces of children studying the photographer with great intensity, people whose storylines are etched on their cheeks and forehead, people walking away through portals, going somewhere, carrying their stories with them.

Tarra Light’s book, Timeless Images: The Heart of Mexico, is a travelogue and memoir, a photographic treasure trove of time spent in Mexico in the late 1960s. The photographs are all black-and-white, a classic form that provides distinct, crystal clear realism, stark and brilliant, true to life. I love black-and-white photographs; the images speak volumes of the stories within. These photographs not only capture the people of Mexico but also reveal a spiritual depth to the artist who took the images. They reveal the desire to discover and hold onto all that is true in life, to understand the meaning of life through the faces she captures, and to record her revelation that “the ultimate source of Truth lies in the spiritual dimension beyond all concepts of reality.” These photographs are real; the people in the images are real; their lives are real; but they are also deeply, intensely beautiful as a deep soulful quality emanates from within. You can see it in their eyes. Stunningly profound, sublime, and, yes, simply beautiful!
