Under a Dark Star is a work of fiction in the Christian romance, historical, and suspense subgenres, and is the second novel of The Dark Moon Trilogy penned by author Anna Faversham. The narrative delves into the dark underbelly of smuggling on an island off the south coast of England in 1823, where one cruel and ruthless man, known as the Dark Star, orchestrates nefarious activities that bring poverty to the island. Lieutenant Karl Thorsen and reformed smuggler Daniel Tynton join forces to combat this evil, with Karl entranced by a mysterious Frenchwoman caught in the Dark Star's grasp, leading to a deadly confrontation.

Author Anna Faversham has crafted a riveting romantic novel that immersed me in a world of suspense, intrigue, and moral ambiguity where the right path is hard to see, but well worth finding. The author's vivid descriptions and rich historical detail gripped me right away and brought the setting to life, evoking a sense of urgency and danger with each turn of the page. The complex dynamics between the characters, particularly the fraught relationship between Karl and Daniel, were authentically penned with distinct character voices, exploring themes of redemption, loyalty, and the consequences of past actions in a naturalistic fashion. The relentless pursuit of justice against the backdrop of smuggling operations and the tyranny of the Dark Star is an exciting premise that gives a lot of complex and interesting story dynamics, and the challenges that the smuggling world presents to the characters kept me captivated throughout. Overall, Under a Dark Star is a highly recommended read that lingers in the mind long after the final chapter.
