Vera Warden and the Two-Faced Demon by J. Rose is a fantasy novel for middle-grade kids. The book follows sixth-grader Virginia Warden (Vera), a child coding prodigy who has just received a scholarship to enroll at the elite Morton Academy of Technology. Suffering from Craniofacial Difference, Vera has faced bullies all her life, and Morton Tech is no different. However, she encounters a greater threat when her ability to converse with ghosts takes a new turn, and she witnesses a terrifying demon haunting the school. Intent on getting free, Inky the demon schemes its way to steal people's faces. Now, together with a friend, Vera must find a way to stop Inky before it's too late. Does she have the courage to be the hero everyone needs her to be?

J. Rose weaves a fascinating fantasy yarn about a young girl overcoming her self-doubt and detractors to become the hero she was always meant to be. Vera Warden and the Two-Faced Demon is the perfect book for young teenagers and tweens who love sci-fi or fantasy. Vera is a protagonist who inspires people. As with most middle graders, she has trouble fitting into large social groups or among popular kids. Remarkably, she keeps a cool head while facing spoilt bullies who have numerous advantages over her. I enjoyed her new friendship. This is a captivating fantasy adventure. It is a book that I will recommend to all the young sci-fi and fantasy readers out there.
