Victory by Dr. Nicole Elaine Avery is a mesmerizing coffee table book that beautifully combines art, spirituality, politics, and empowerment. Based on a photography art show from 2018, the book pays homage to the powerful women presenting an unapologetic celebration of black femininity. Through powerful portraits of black women with painted faces, Dr. Avery captures the essence and strength of her subjects. Each set of portraits is accompanied by a statement from the model, introducing themselves and peeling away layers of unfamiliarity. This establishes a deeper connection between the artist, models, and readers, immersing us in the rich tapestry of their stories.

What sets Victory by Dr. Nicole Elaine Avery apart is the artist's personal spiritual experiences in painting the models' faces. The descriptions accompanying each set of portraits share these intimate moments, adding depth to the book. The images and narratives work harmoniously to provoke thought, evoke emotions, and challenge societal norms. The book fearlessly tackles the pressing issues black communities face, particularly black women. It confronts black female voices' historical and contemporary silencing while celebrating their power, beauty, and allure. I embarked on a spiritual journey as I delved into the pages. It uplifted my spirits, rekindled my connection with my female ancestors, and fostered a greater appreciation for the resilience and strength of black women. The book's perfect blend of visuals, personal narratives, and social commentary creates a compelling narrative that leaves a lasting impact. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to everyone seeking a profound and transformative artistic experience.
