When a Phoenix Rose Nevermore is the standalone sequel to C.A. Nicholas's Cycles of the Phoenix. This anthology collection contains some captivating inter-connected short stories, mesmerizing poems, as well as a couple of absurdist comedy skits. Most of the stories revolve around a young woman named Dahlia Noelle. Bullied in school and plagued by self-doubt and anxiety, twenty-three-year-old Dahlia suffers from constant bouts of depression-related episodes that lead her to self-harm and suicidal tendencies. A talented comic book writer, Dahlia lost her job due to trying circumstances, and now, in her free time, has fantasies about her crush, who is in a relationship with one of her former friends. With seemingly no hope for the future and drowning in melancholia, will Dahlia be able to prevail and make a life for herself?

Author C.A. Nicholas has crafted an enthralling anthology collection that navigates through a wide range of tones, genres, and styles. From realistic stories following people with mental health disorders to exaggerated sci-fi battles that wouldn't look out of place in an anime, When a Phoenix Rose Nevermore takes you on a wild ride you don't want to miss. While the stories featuring Dahlia and her family and friends have believable characters you will find relatable, other tales revolve around quirky and over-the-top characters such as Bob Tom, the likes of whom you may have come across in books like Sir Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. I thoroughly enjoyed the reading experience, and if you love literary fiction, you will too.
