Whispers of Sage by Bil Howard is a romance novel with a modern twist. Traditionally, romance novels usually follow the format of boy-meets-girl who then live happily ever after. Well, Whispers of Sage is more like boy meets a few girls, and girl meets a few boys before they each discover who they really are and what they truly want. Katherine is a girl from Pittsburgh, PA, who is engaged to be married to Sean. Sean suddenly gets transferred to Scottsdale, AZ, through his job which results in Sean and Katherine having a long distance relationship for a while. However, one fine day Katherine decides to surprise Sean with a visit and embarks on a 2000-mile road trip alone. Alone the way, somewhere in Colorado, her car breaks down and she is rescued by Ethan, a cowboy who lives alone on a ranch with his two border collies, Sam and Lucy, and his horses. Katherine develops a passion for horses, and though Ethan and Katherine are both attracted to each other, they also know that she is engaged and so Katherine continues on her way to Arizona. What happens after that as all of these central protagonists navigate through life, heartache, and love is what Whispers of Sage is about.
Bil Howard has written a modern romance novel in an utterly believable way. The book showcases modern dating as it is, and also highlights the importance of knowing ourselves first before trying to get to know someone else in order to find true love. I enjoyed Bil’s writing style and loved the vivid descriptions of places and events in the American mid-west. This is a true, modern western romance novel that all romance genre fans are bound to enjoy.
