Wily and the Canine Pandemic by Michelle Weidenbenner is the perfect middle school to early teen adventure story that will never outdate this generation of readers. The author has written a creative, engaging storyline that brings to life a fun, fantastical plot alongside very believable and heartwarming characters. I can see many young readers getting completely engrossed in the chapters, as well as parents enjoying the story as a bedtime read for even younger children. Wily, the main character, is caring, virtuous, with an inner strength which comes out when he is faced with bullies. He is somewhat of a loner as a character and his life at home brings no joy. Therefore, he reverts to a hobby around science which comes in handy when he gives himself a quest of finding a cure to the virus that seems to be killing all the dogs.

Once he embarks on this challenge, Wily encounters lots of different challenges and adventures, as he puts his problem-solving prowess into action. Readers will naturally build their excitement, chapter upon chapter, as the author brings the storyline to a powerful close, with Wily himself learning a lot about his abilities and his friendships along the way. Wily and the Canine Pandemic will serve as a great talking point between parent and child around some of these subject areas. Michelle Weidenbenner keeps the pace of the story at the right level for this reader, and personally I found the book incredibly entertaining to read. It is without question that I highly recommend this original but fun adventure story to any younger reader.
