A Puppy for Joey by Mary C. Paul and RyAnn A. Hall features a young boy called Joey who is lonely and longs to have a puppy he can play with. His mother tries to cheer him up with toys, but he really wants a puppy, so she takes him to the pet store. Joey doesn't see a puppy that he wants. On the way home they go through the park and see a man who is trying to give puppies a new home. He works for the South East Beagle Rescue. Joey finds a puppy he likes and decides to name her Jackie. He takes her home and promises she will never be locked in a cage again.

Mary C. Paul and RyAnn A. Hall have created a charming book in A Puppy for Joey which encourages children looking to get a puppy to choose one that really needs a home from a shelter. The South East Beagle Rescue helps dogs find homes and is a non-profit organisation. This book is a great way to promote their charity and help get donations for it. The illustrations are bright and cheerful and will attract children. I think the words on the page could be off putting as they are written over the drawings and some of the letters blend into the drawings, making it a little difficult to read at times. I don't think this takes away from the overall story, however, and it is a delightful tale that will appeal.
