I had mixed feelings about A Shed in a Cucumber Field by S.L. Russell. The story is about two sisters, named Vic and Bel, who have not spoken to each other in over twenty years. When Bel writes Vic, begging her for a place to stay while her place is getting remodeled, Vic is hesitant but allows her to come. During their time together, memories of a tragedy from their past come back to haunt them and this adds further strain to their relationship. In order to be the family they both crave, they have to learn to forgive and forget.

I had a hard time connecting to the characters in A Shed in a Cucumber Field. Vic is a cold person who tries to be a good Christian. I did not like that she had so many negative thoughts about people. This made her seem more like a real person than an actual character. I could see throughout the whole book that she was struggling with her faith. I liked her sister Bel a lot more. Bel was full of life, but had her own secrets. I found it amazing that they did not blame each other for the tragedy from their past.

My favorite character in the book was Frankie. She was amazing. I think more churches need people like her running them. I liked all the verses that she gave out. I also appreciated that S.L. Russell wrote what those verses said. I found the book did not pick up until a third of the way in. After that I enjoyed the story. After reading this story, it did make me question my own faith. I think S.L. Russell’s words were just what I needed to hear. For that, I thank you.
