The tale starts with a young man, Tashi, soliloquizing about his mother who has just died, and he is alone looking for a familiar place. The young man takes us back to the stories he grew up with at his mother’s knees. His mother told his siblings and him about some monsters who had taken captive some of the girls from their tribe. She told them part of a story every night, and they couldn’t wait until after dinner the next night to continue the tale. His mother always told it as if she were the protagonist of the tale, which makes it very memorable for the listener. Tashi takes us to her side to listen to this nightly ritual. He mingles the past with his present as he relives the experience.

Tashi, like many in his tribe, believes the tales to be myths to keep the young ones still. Then one day he gets the opportunity to live for himself the same tales his mother told. Like in his mother’s stories, there are races who travel through space. Once more they have come to harvest those special earthlings who were prepared from their birth to be the saviors of their planet. The savior’s planet is unbalanced and the extraterrestrials have come to help them.

Tashi’s mission is to find the balance in this planet and save many from extermination. He isn’t alone in his task; there are other special people who have been trained from childhood through the same stories, and who will give of themselves to protect their planet. Upon all of them falls the task to save us all.

This book is quite different from what I thought it would be. The author created a very good story, and the writing is fluid. She takes the theme of a primitive tribe and mixes it with extraterrestrials. The result is a great story that will entertain you for hours and I recommend it for anyone, young or old.
