In Catherine’s Kid: One Boy's Story of Growing Up in the Arkansas Delta, author Donald W. Bell takes readers back in time to the early 1940s. He begins by sharing some of his family’s history, but quickly moves on to share his childhood memories. After the death of his father his family lived with his granddad. He and his grandfather were very close; when the older gentleman passed away, Donald was devastated. This memoir continues on with happier and often humorous moments such as the time he used a straw and a bean to shoot his aunt in her rump. His uncle chasing him must have been frightening at the time, but brought a smile to my face as I read about it. I found his recounting of meeting Johnny Black heartwarming and yet sad.
Catherine’s Kid is a fascinating look at the life of the author, Donald W. Bell. This memoir is filled with the author’s memories, many of which brought a smile to my face. There were many delightful memories, too many to do justice to in this review. The writing style of the author is conversational. I truly felt as if we were sharing a cup of coffee as he talked with me and shared his story. The words flow smoothly off the page. The pace is nice and brisk. I read this book in one sitting, never losing interest. I quickly became caught up in the author’s life. It brought back many memories of my own childhood and teen years.
