Children of Semyaza by Kevin C. Noel follows the tale of Garrick, a seemingly ordinary teenage boy, except he is anything but ordinary. Having endured many hardships in life, the most prominent being constant bullying and harassment by his cousin Celina, Garrick discovers he is one of the Incardians. Now with the help of Octavius, he must fulfill his destiny but Garrick finds himself constantly swayed by the need to seek revenge instead. Will he exact revenge or will he save all supernatural beings from their ultimate demise?

Children of Semyaza by Kevin C. Noel is a riveting story focusing on Garrick, from the visions he has to the bullying he endures, down to his final decision to either help others of his kind or take revenge. This story is not only driven by the rich lore of the Incardians but also by the character development we witness throughout in Garrick and I feel that this makes the book special. Noel does such an amazing job of introducing the various aspects of the supernatural world but ultimately the main focus is Garrick, his experiences, and the choices he makes. I loved how the world-building and all the other characters were given significance and helped the overall plot while it still was a very character-driven story. I also felt that Garrick was very real in terms of the way he not only viewed the things he experienced but also how he was aware of himself and his flaws. I really enjoyed Children of Semyaza and would gladly recommend it.

This is a fine and objective review. However, while the review does acknowledge the world building in it, it doesn't emphasize how Noel takes the tired trope of vampires and creates (and reignites) a whole new mythos surrounding their existence within the world of what he terms the "Amblerverse".
