As a single mother of a mentally challenged child, Anya could use some company, even if it's "politsiya." After her mother-in-law Calina was murdered, Anya met a police photographer named Andrei, who showed interest in the murder. Andrei's search for answers leads him to two unexpected outcomes. The first is his growing affection for the woman he's getting answers from, and the second is the increased possibility of being killed. He also discovers a possible link between Calina's murder and a diamond smuggling ring. Andrei and Anya would be the next to die if they didn't act fast enough and find refuge. Set in the 1950s in Russia, Nina Romano's Dark Eyes is a riveting historical tale that follows two lovers' spine-chilling involvement with killers and a race for answers that turns into fleeing for safety.

Nina's plot slowly unravels with meticulously built characters and relationships. I loved getting to know the protagonists and found it exciting that Anya and Andrei had a rocky relationship initially but couldn't resist their attraction to each other later. Additionally, I enjoyed looking forward to seeing such Russian words as "goniff" and "dedushka" in different parts of the story and checking their meaning in the glossary. And since I'm someone who loves books that make me emotional, I was captivated by every shocking twist in Dark Eyes. It contains several poignant themes, including imprisonment, torture, sexual abuse, and murder. You will love Dark Eyes if you're a fan of historical novels or fancy following frightening, risky scenarios from the safety of your home. Its brilliant mix of well-developed characters and addictive, chaotic scenes will keep you engaged from start to finish.
