"You're a selfish lover. You always come first and have no interest in my needs." No, that isn't a line from a romance novel, but an insightful quote from a letter found in Dear Debt: A Story About Breaking Up With Debt by Melanie Lockert, a graduate student who struggled with $81,000 of student loan debt. From New York City to Portland, OR, Lockert dealt with the harsh realities of underemployment and food stamps. Her journey resulted in learning practical tips like understanding spending triggers, choosing a strategy to address debt (avalanche versus snowball method), overcoming debt fatigue, prioritizing her health and even negotiating her salary. Through questioning your cultural and personal beliefs about money, referring to resources like Student Loan Hero or SoFi, and using Ebates and Groupon to pay less for items, you will change your mindset and implement a strategy to eliminate any kind of debt.

As someone who has read numerous financial planning and debt reduction books, I loved Dear Debt. The cover of a broken heart and key was apt for this page turner. It was comparatively short at just 166 pages. But it was written in a personal but authoritative style that was well researched. The format included a chapter devoted to every aspect of debt management, worksheets and letters that once appeared on her award-winning blog. Lockert is the blogger for Dear Debt, a blog selected by Yahoo! Finance as one of the top five personal finance stories in 2015. Dear Debt is highly recommended.
