After 15 years in the FBI, top notch special agent Caitlin Diggs retires and moves from Washington DC and becomes a private investigator in Salem, Massachusetts. As a city that is famous for its paranormal activities and odd people, she feels renewed and welcomed as a person with psychic abilities –- that is until she travels to another world by accident while chasing a murderer and watches her alternate self being killed. Demon Inhibitions is a paranormal thriller by Gary Starta.

I love how the protagonist’s tough personality shines through her speech, especially when she describes one of her dates as “George, the overconfident bozo/realtor broker”. It makes me laugh right away. The way she acquires her special ability is interesting and instantly reminds me of The X-Files, my old favorite show. The other characters are very well-written. I’m quite fond of Celeste, Caitlin’s psychic cat, and I like Brianna McFadden, Caitlin’s protective witch neighbor. The dialogue is sharp and I am impressed with the pacing of the story. It is not slow but not rushed either. The prose is straightforward without the burden of unnecessary descriptions, which I appreciate very much. The unpredictable and deep plot is the best I have read so far.

Demon Inhibitions is a fascinating supernatural detective story that has humor and science fiction elements as well. My interest didn't waver from start to finish, and I completed my reading in just one sitting. Author Gary Starta definitely has written an amazing story with multiple sub-genres. A great read.
