Flight Lessons is a children's book written by Eleonora Romaniello and illustrated by Catarina Giorgi. In winter, the female robin prepares a beautiful nest in which to lay her eggs. When spring arrives, it is not long before Lily, Louis, and Leo hatch from the eggs. Flying lessons are essential for these young hatchlings and young Lily and Leo take to flight like a fish to water. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for young Louis, whose first attempt at flying has him crashing to the ground from such a long way up in his tree. After such a bad start, Louis is too scared to ever try to fly again, but with the seasons changing fast, both parents desperately try to encourage their scared chick to try again while the weather is still in their favor and predators are scarce.

I found Flight Lessons to be quite a relatable story. Eleonora Romaniello's tale of a young bird who is terrified to try flying for a second time after a bad start will resonate with many young readers. Failure is not only humiliating but can leave memories of an experience that nobody would ever want to relive. As a parent, it takes a lot of patience and a boatload of encouragement to teach your child that practice makes perfect. The stress of having to repeat the process, thinking that the same result will occur, can be overwhelming, but as a bird who relies on their wings to get by in life, there truly is no choice but to conquer those fears. Flight Lessons teaches children that no matter how scared you are, overcoming your fear is the only way to cut the ropes that are holding you back. I recommend Flight Lessons to all young readers aged five and over, so they know that if at first you don't succeed, try and try again.
