Noah Baker is a bright young lawyer. A Harvard graduate, he is working as an associate in a prestigious law firm and competing with the inept but ruthless Griffin Whitely for a partnership. While negotiating a contentious divorce settlement and having an affair with the sexy Natasha, he is battling boredom in his job. Not for long, though. Characters In Michael Biehl’s novels seem to attract trouble, and For Dear Life is no exception. It’s hardly surprising, then, that Noah’s prospective new client proves to be someone with whom Noah had conflict in the past and whom Noah is sure is mentally unstable. Worse, this client wants to sue the CIA for twenty million dollars, and Noah’s refusal to help him makes him angry. This leads to Noah becoming embroiled in a murder trial in which he battles unethical lawyers, investigator mistakes, and a justice system that isn’t always just. Confronted with the reality that the police, prosecutors, media, and even the public prefer to look for someone to blame rather than seek the truth, Noah finds himself clinging to his sanity and his freedom.
Michael Biehl is an accomplished lawyer and trained in psychology. He has the background knowledge needed to write an entirely credible courtroom drama and uses that knowledge to create scenes in which witnesses testify in intricate and fascinating detail. But Biehl is also a talented author. He creates intriguing characters who come to life and whose joys, fears, and sorrows we can’t help but share. His language is rich in imagery. He weaves delightful dry humor into his stories and has that wonderful knack of keeping you turning the pages, desperate to solve the mystery before you have to put the book down. I was completely immersed in the task of finding the killer and saving Noah. I finished reading For Dear Life feeling like I had been on trial. This is the second Michael Biehl work I have read, and I will look for more. Lovers of great courtroom dramas and crime novels will find For Dear Life deeply satisfying. If you enjoy novels by John Grisham and James Patterson, you should definitely read Michael Biehl’s works. This author’s name belongs up there with the best legal thrillers.
