Every family is unique and special, but not all are the same. Although the standard is one father and one mother, this dynamic is not always the case. This can make growing up with only one parent difficult for children. It's important to talk to them so they understand the situation better. In Joy Comes: A Story of Fatherhood, Dedrick L Moone uses his own experience to address this topic. The story is about Lamar, a boy who lives alone with his mother, and shows some of the complications and emotional conflicts he goes through as he grows up. Through various situations, we see his doubts and how he tackles some meetings with his father. However, Lamar's story doesn't stop there because we witness how he becomes a good father in taking care of his beautiful daughter, and also the new situations he has to go through.

Because of his experiences, Lamar has difficulty trusting people, which is understandable when witnessing their joys and disappointments. There are bitter moments because his meetings with his father were not as he idealized them. We also see him having trouble interacting with other people at certain times. That is precisely why I liked this story because it is realistic. Many children go through similar situations and don't have anyone to talk to about it. We see Lamar overcoming his emotional conflicts little by little. Dedrick L Moone narrates in detail a wide variety of situations, which I think will be helpful for many single parents. In addition, the illustrations are colorful and expressive. Joy Comes: A Story of Fatherhood is ideal for single parents and children to become even closer.

What does it take to be a good father? Lamar's father, Lavon, left him right after his birth, refusing to visit the hospital and see his newborn son. Lamar's mother, Renee, never spoke with him about Lavon. She wanted to protect her son, but instead, Lamar was growing up as an insecure and even aggressive boy. Father and son finally met, but they separated again soon, disappointed with each other. Lamar lost trust in his close friends. He got some confidence back only after some therapy sessions. Lamar met Karen and fell in love with her. They got married and welcomed a wonderful baby girl named Patrice. But then Lamar and his wife divorced. Karen took Patrice to live with her, but the girl felt horrible without her father. Will Lamar have enough strength to fight for his beloved daughter? Joy Comes by Dedrick L. Moone is a thought-provoking nonfiction book for children, teenagers, and their parents.

Joy Comes is an inspirational read. In his book, Dedrick L. Moone speaks about the importance of faith, God, and the church in our lives in a confident and easy-to-understand manner. But Joy Comes is not preachy. It reads like an engaging family drama. Dedrick is a wonderful storyteller. He tells about the trials and tribulations of Lamar's life, reflecting on his own life experience. Lamar is an interesting and complex character. He is not ideal. Dedrick reveals that Lamar used to bully his friends while dealing with his insecurities. But Lamar never gave up, with his uncle, Lavon, his grandmother, Mae, and his friends having a positive and loving impact on his life. Also, determined to be a good father to his precious daughter, he always kept faith in God. Thus, Lamar sets an example for single parents and children growing up without fathers because his story is genuine. I appreciated the vibrant illustrations by the gifted Arsalan Khan and the great message of Joy Comes. Dedrick encourages us to stay brave, loving, and supportive of each other no matter what.
