Jupiter the Gassy Giant: A Space Smells Book by K. J. Field is a delightful picture book for children aged 4-8. It wonderfully explores the functions and constituents of Jupiter, primarily in the voice of the giant planet itself. He proudly begins his speech with the mention of his humongous size and gradually lets young readers know about one of the most significant contributors to his greatness: his gas! The two moons, Io and Ganymede, soon join him as he, with an amusing level of emphasis on the smell, explains his gaseous structure to them. The hilarious journey into Jupiter’s brilliant composition comes to an end with an unforeseen twist.

From the very beginning, K. J. Field’s Jupiter the Gassy Giant made it difficult for me to stop smiling. Jupiter’s proud statements about his “gassy goodness” along with the witty comments delivered by the characters in the book make it a truly worthy pick for storytime. Field’s excellent sense of humor enables the author to provide correct information while keeping it fun and, most importantly, engaging enough for young readers. The way the author plays with the words throughout the book is simply brilliant. I also appreciated the addition of a special section at the end that offers a satisfactory explanation of how humanity has learned about Jupiter's smell, as some young readers are likely to wonder about it. Irrespective of age, Jupiter the Gassy Giant has the potential to make any reader laugh out loud.
