Kinzie and the P. U. Zoo by Donna Boock is a fast-paced book aimed at 6-9-year-old young readers. It follows the story of Kinzie, a smart first-grader who is always gathering ideas for new inventions. She lets her imagination run wild with excitement when her teacher announces that the class is going on a zoo trip. Things go wrong when she unexpectedly gets pink eye from Ben, her classroom rival, which prevents her from accompanying her class to the zoo. To make things worse, Ben’s mother drops him at her house for the day. Their shared misfortune, however, unites them as they decide to build their own backyard zoo.

Donna Boock’s Kinzie and the P. U. Zoo elicited a laugh from me right away. Kinzie is a fun and relatable character; her thoughts on issues that are mostly significant to children can entertain kids and adults alike. There is never a dull moment, which makes it a good pick for young readers. Another reason why I feel that youngsters would enjoy this book is that it is based on the current interests of kids. Most children are likely to enjoy Kinzie’s genius inventions and her “ViewTube” channel where she shares them. I also loved how Donna portrayed the light yet realistic rivalry between Kinzie and Ben. I think that the story will not only make the readers laugh but also encourage them to actively use their imaginations to make the most out of any situation.
