Let’s Go to the Zoo with Sam and Sue is a picture book for preschool children written by Deborah Dolan Hunt and illustrated by Xavier Pom. Mom, Sam and Sue are spending the day at the zoo. There’s so much to see that it will be hard to visit every animal exhibit in one day. First, they visit the monkeys who are enjoying their bananas and swinging from vines. Then, they find the tiger exhibit, and they notice that one tiger actually has blue eyes. As they look at the animals, their mom encourages Sam and Sue to look for and count each kind of animal. There are four tigers in the tiger enclosure, and six lions in theirs. Then, Mom lets Sam and Sue ride on ponies, and afterwards they all enjoy ice cream cones. All too soon, it’s almost time to go home, and each child gets to pick one more animal to visit. Which ones will they choose?

Deborah Dolan Hunt’s picture book for preschool children, Let’s Go to the Zoo with Sam and Sue, teaches kids to count and identify colors as they follow the mother and her two kids on their zoo outing. I love going to the zoo and found that Hunt’s story conveys the excitement and adventure of zoo visits quite well. Xavier Pom’s illustrations are marvelous! His use of soft pastel colors and detailed animal drawings make this book an especially attractive option for story time. Kids will have a grand time counting along with Sam and Sue and seeing the different animals found in the zoo. I especially liked the fact that the zoo depicted is one in which the animals are kept in open air and natural settings. Let’s Go to the Zoo with Sam and Sue is most highly recommended.
