Children often hear the excuse, “We don’t have the money for that.” Sadly, not many parents take the time to explain to their children what money is and how to properly use it. Enter Thelma Ribeiro and her fabulous book for children on finances, Money and Finance for Kids. This delightful book tells the story of Marlon and the financial lessons his grandfather teaches him. A wise parent explains reasons to their children. Children understand that adults pay for groceries, etc. with pieces of plastic. It is hard for them to place value on pieces of paper or understand that plastic represents creditworthiness. To assist children in understanding money, Thelma has written an excellent introduction to the meaning of money and the connection to work.

Thelma Ribeiro has authored a fantastic book in Money and Finance for Kids. This book is introductory and easy for teaching children about money. Children know money is necessary to purchase stuff, but what is money, and why is it necessary? Thelma draws on her knowledge as a mother and a holder of a business management MBA to explain the history of money in simple terms. In addition, she takes time to explain why cultures moved from the barter system to the current economic system. Her grasp of finances and her love for children shine through the words in this book. Parents will love this easy-to-read, excellently illustrated book. Children will be absorbed in the story. I spent over 40 years counseling on properly handling finances and highly recommend this educational book as a starting point on teaching children about money and financial responsibility.
